Arsenal in 1971/79

Arsenal finished fifth in the Football League First Division in their 46th consecutive season at that level. The club featured for the first time in the European Cup, reaching the quarterfinals before losing to defending champions Ajax. Arsenal reached the FA Cup final, their fifth cup final in five years, but lost 1-0 to Leeds United. Ray Kennedy was top scorer in both the league and all competitions, whilst Frank McLintock served as captain. In December, midfielder Alan Ball joined Arsenal for a Football League record fee of £200,000.
