The tournament that changed how the world saw African football. Cameroon beat holders Argentina 1–0 in the opening match in Milan, then became the first African side to reach a World Cup quarter-final — where England needed extra time and two Gary Lineker penalties to win 3–2. Roger Milla, 38 years old and coaxed out of semi-retirement, scored four goals and celebrated each one dancing at the corner flag.
