Chelsea in 1998/00

Chelsea's 1998–99 season brought European Super Cup success against Champions League winners Real Madrid, though it proved their only trophy. Manager Gianluca Vialli, aged 35, retired as a player to focus on management as the club signed Marcel Desailly from A.C. Milan, Albert Ferrer from Barcelona and Pierluigi Casiraghi from Lazio in a club-record £5.4 million move. Gianfranco Zola scored 15 goals in all competitions during his best season at the club, helping secure third place and qualification for their first ever UEFA Champions League campaign.
