Senegal 2002: beating the world champions first

Senegal’s World Cup debut, and one of the great tournament entrances — holders France beaten 1–0 in the opening match in Seoul through Papa Bouba Diop. The Lions of Teranga went on to the quarter-finals, matching Cameroon’s African record, before a golden goal for Turkey ended it. The same El Hadji Diouf-led side had reached the Cup of Nations final that spring, losing to Cameroon on penalties.

That 2002 tournament remains the reference point — Senegal beat holders France 1–0 in the opening match and reached the quarter-final on debut. The other landmark is more recent: a first Africa Cup of Nations title at the 2021 edition, won on penalties against Egypt.
